ERIN STARED AFTER Jake Fitzgerald, her new landlord and secretly the champion of her heart. She would never have asked him if she could rent his ranch house if she hadn’t known that she was safe as robins’ eggs in a nest there. Jake saw her as nothing more than a sister; she was hardly daring controversy into her life by using his house.

Anything romantic between them would only be wishful thinking on her part. The thought had never crossed his mind; he hadn’t even blinked when she’d asked him.

She hadn’t been honest about why she wanted to use his house, though. While she did need to focus on setting up her clinic, she had a greater purpose. The town of No Chance, Texas—specifically Cody the Clown and John Carruth, Jake’s surprise twin brother and the billionaire investor of the No Chance rodeo—had asked her to try to sway Jake into riding again for his hometown, the second his contract with Farmbluff was up.

Money would not sway Jake. The townspeople involved in the subterfuge agreed on that. Jake cared as little about money as his brother John appreciated it.

Family would not convince him. Simply put, once Jake had found out that his family included a new, secret branch so unlike himself as to be cut from a different tree, Jake had moved to Farmbluff. John and Jake, twin brothers, strangers to each other, were destined to stay that way as far as Jake was concerned.

Cody, an expert on sour family relations due to his own relationship with his brother, Clem, had suggested Erin conjure up an appropriate lure to bring Jake back. No Chance wanted its star rider on the home team, but mostly, they just wanted Jake back where he belonged. It felt as though a part of the family had gone renegade on them, and no one, from Ida Lambert, owner of the Dancing Chicken diner, to Sheriff Rory Whitmore, felt Jake should have left.

Erin had moved to Farmbluff to keep distance between herself and Jake. Her crush on him was useless. She’d always loved him. He’d always treated her like a childhood playmate, one he perhaps enjoyed more than others, but nothing like the woman Erin dreamed of Jake falling in love with.

So, as the hour had turned late in the Dancing Chicken and all members of the small town’s committee were exhausted with thinking of anything which might change Jake’s mind, it was suggested that only she was the proper person to convince Jake. Erin had shaken her head. Said no. Protested.

In the end, she’d reluctantly said she’d give it a try. And it was Chloe Winters, John Carruth’s fiancée, who had suggested Erin begin her campaign for Jake Fitzgerald from within his own house. Where better to corner one’s prey than in their own lair?

Erin pointed out that the plan was somewhat overdone. There was no need to sneak up on Jake. Someone he respected just needed to ask him to come back, tell him that he had too much of No Chance’s blood to switch allegiance to Farmbluff forever.
